946 Restaurants. One Seamless National Rollout.

A coordinated digital menu board program that integrated construction, electrical, data, and installation solutions while helping restaurants remain operational.

McDonald's Digital Menu Boards & National Sign Installation Program

Overview:

The project involved replacing the existing static drive-thru menu boards with new digital menu boards that required new foundations. To minimize disruption to restaurant operations, Pride Visual Solutions used large ground screws instead of traditional concrete foundations. While the ground screw installation adds some time to the installation process, the entire project could still be completed in a single day.

More importantly, this solution avoided the need for multiple drive-thru closures that would otherwise be required for excavation, concrete pouring, curing, and a return visit to complete the installation. The restaurant remained fully operational during the project, and drive-thru sales account for more than 75% of its revenue. The ground screw solution allowed us to complete the work with a single closure period, helping each franchisee maintain business continuity and minimize the impact on sales.

The Challenge:

McDonald's identified the need to keep the drive-thru open and limit closures to a single shutdown whenever possible, helping to preserve revenue, reduce operational disruption, and maintain a positive guest experience during the installation.

Constraints: Site conditions varied between hardscape and softscape, with each restaurant presenting unique design challenges.

The Solution:

By implementing a phased, location-based national deployment strategy and utilizing a Ground Screw solution, the program minimizes operational disruption and enables restaurants to remain fully operational throughout the installation process. This approach allows all the work to be completed within a single day, significantly reducing Drive-Thru downtime and ensuring a rapid return to normal operations in 1 day.

Key Features:

  • ODMB application for presale/main menu board display with Ground Screw installation
  • Galvanized Ground Screw technology to eliminate the need for concrete and curing time
  • Construction (breaking up of base(s), landscape & hardscape finishing)
  • Electrical slots to support disconnect, hookup, reconfiguration
  • Various sizes for Northern & Southern frost zones e.g. 8' x 4.5" with custom adaptor plates for the Presell & Main Menu board
  • Complex install that includes removal/disposal of existing static menu boards, ground screw installation with adaptor plate for Menu Boards, trenching in both hardscape and softscape (conduits data/electrical), data commissioning, protective bollards with a quality audio install

Execution:

Timeline: FY 2017 to FY 2024.

Collaboration / communication with the franchisee community that helped to minimize the anxiety from the Owner Operator with a good plan and constant updates & understanding before, during and post installation.

Results & Impact:

Executed a seamless transition and minimized downtime with a national, Canada-wide deployment sign installation plan completing 946 restaurants over a 5-year period.
